Virtual communication: HCPCS codes G2010 and G2012 utilizing CarePICS
CMS developed two new codes for 2019 to pay a nominal amount of money for a virtual check-in and for reviewing and image or message, “store-and-forward.” They are HCPCS codes G2010 and G2012.

G2012 brief communication technology-based virtual check-in
This code is for sue when the check-in does not result from a service within the past 7 days, or result in a service in the next 24 hours, or next available appointment. It is for brief, non-face-to-face service provided by a physician or non-physician practitioner, not a staff member. It may only be used for established patients. The provider must have E/M for their scope of practice, and it is mainly used to determine if an appointment is needed.
It does require verbal consent to bill and is subject to co-insurance and deductible.
|G2012||Brief communication technology-based service, e.g., virtual check-in, by a physician or other qualified health care professional who can report evaluation and management services, provided to an established patient, not originating from a related E/M service provided within the previous 7 days nor leading to an E/M service or procedure within the next 24 hours or soonest available appointment; 5-10 minutes of medical discussion|
G2010, store and forward
Do you ever wish a patient could send you a picture of their wound or rash AND you can bill for it? Well, now is your chance. Providers will be paid to look at pictures sent to them by established patients.
This code has the same requirements that it does not arise from a service within the past 7 days or result in a service in the next 24 hours or next available appointment.
The provider looks at the image or video, and there is subsequent communication by the provider or staff member to the patient. Follow up is required. If the image is insufficient to make a determination, it cannot be billed.
It also requires consent (verbal, written or electronic) and the charge will be subject to co-insurance and deductible. It may only be provided to an established patient.
|G2010||Remote evaluation of recorded video and/or images submitted by an established patient (e.g, store and forward), including interpretation with follow-up with the patient within 24 business hours, not originating from a related E/M service provided within the previous 7 days nor leading to an E/M service or procedure within the next 24 hours or soonest available appointment|
